Background-
Arna Wendell Bontemps was born on October 13th, 1902 in Alexandria, Louisiana. His mother was a teacher while his father was a brick mason. When he was three years old he and his family moved to Los Angeles. He decided that he didn't want to become a mason like his father, so he was sent to a white boarding school. Before he left his father said, " don't go up there acting colored." Arna was disappointed that his father wanted him to try and forget his heritage. Bontemps went to Pacific Union College and graduated in 1923.
Soon after graduation he began publishing his work in magazines to try and encourage more young African American writers to pursue their passion.
