More Information
The Harlem Globetrotters were a rag-tag basketball team who started "barnstorming" other teams because of racial discrimination and Jim Crow Laws. They would go around and play against any basketball team, hence the name Harlem Globetrotters. They first started off as the Savoy Big Five, playing exhibitions before the dances started in the Savoy Ballroom. When the ballroom first opened, they were one of the prime attractions.
They largely participated in the WPBT (World Professional Basketball Tournament) winning it in 1940, but soon the NBA (National Basketball Association) came around, and started drafting blacks into their originally-white teams. Because of this the Globetrotters added comicality to their routines and soon became more of an entertainment team than a team for the actual sport. The Globetrotters now are a stunt basketball team who let spectators join in on the fun.
